            The Earliest Spring Ever!

Prospect Hill Orchards has experienced the earliest spring ever!

Apricot blossoms opened on March 20 and peaches on March 30.

Apples opened on April 17, when a normal apple blossom time is around Mother’s Day! With such an early blossom time, we were afraid of frost and, boy, have we had it!  We have been fighting frost for more than a dozen nights.  To protect against frost we do three things:  we run a huge overhead fan to stir the cold and warm air together.  We use our irrigation equipment to spray water over the trees.  The ice forming on the branches actually releases heat and saves the tiny buds and fruitlets.  Lastly, on really cold nights, we use heaters to warm the air around the fans and then stir that warm air into the cold air.  It is lots of work and many sleepless nights, but the final result is generally good.

Now that we are through bloom and the blossoms are set we have a pretty nice crop on most varieties. The season is running 7 – 10 days earlier than normal.  This will probably impact the harvest time for cherries and maybe even peaches.  Right now we are expecting cherry season to be about a week earlier than usual.  Our guess is about June 15th or so.  Be sure to check the website again for updates and sign up for our email list at the bottom of this page so you don’t miss it!   We look forward to a great year with outstanding fruit quality.  See you all soon.    Judy & Steve
